Setting the system environment variables should be enough. Please also ensure you have restarted the machine after that.

Also to connect to a remote server with port, should I enable the port in the firewall?

Yes.

The port is automatically chosen in the range 10001-10010, but can be explicitly specified with the startup option "port"

is there any other way to be able to connect like tunneling etc?

You can try tunneling it too. Or just open the firewall for the port range 10001-10010 or for the fixed port which you have chosen (see above).
